Packing My Bags for BlogHer 13

in Aging Well, Chicago, Style

Vendula LondonI’m leaving on a jet plane for Chicago tomorrow to attend my third (yes, my third!) BlogHer. I attended my first BlogHer in 2011 with my daughter, Rachel.

Rachel’s blog, Sandals in the Snow, is currently on hiatus due to her all-consuming job right now of raising my grandbaby. Thankfully she wasn’t too busy though to stop by and be my photographer. Thanks honey!

My first year at BlogHer I didn’t spend even one second trying to get into any private parties or special events. I looked at the public party schedule and it seemed jam-packed enough for me. Who needed all the added stress of begging on Twitter for party invites? It all seemed so, well, unseemly. I thought to myself, if somebody doesn’t want me at their party then I’m not going to beg them to invite me.

Pick me! Pick me!

I still have a hard time with the way the private party invites at BlogHer go down. I understand that brands and event planners want to create a buzz, and having dozens of tweeters tweeting out why they should get the precious invites makes sense from that perspective. But still. Begging for a party invite?

And although I couldn’t possibly attend every event at BlogHer–even if I did get an invitation–it is hard to see others get them and not me. It makes me wonder, what’s wrong with me?!?

Nothing. And if you didn’t get every invite that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you, either.

But it sure as heck does bring up old junior high tapes that I never thought I’d hear again.

And yet this year I admit I did beg. A little, anyway. To one party in particular. They did invite me, and I’m thrilled. Thanks Social Soiree! I’ve also snagged invites to Hasbro, American Girl (it’s good to be a grandma!), Chicagonista, One2One Network/Yappem’s The Awesome Party, and of course the BOOMBox Network’s infamous B(l)oomer’s Party (see my post about getting the invite to their party last year). There are some others I’m forgetting, but my husband is going to kill me if I don’t get offline and spend some serious time paying attention to him before I hop on the jet plane on Tuesday, so I’ll post about them as they occur.

What to Wear to BlogHer

Trying to figure out what to wear to the sessions during the day–and all these events at night–is a daunting task. Plus, this year, I’m a speaker!

I feel, rightly or wrongly, that I represent middle-aged women in the blogosphere, and I want to do it well. I want midlife to be seen not just as the end of youth, but as the great beginning to a myriad of new adventures that it truly is.

I also know that I am the first business card anyone is going to see at an event like BlogHer. Presentation counts. That, and the not getting a hickey thing or being a picky eater, are the major pieces of advice my mother gave me that have really served me well in life.

I thought for sure I was going to have to go to the Big City to find appropriate day and evening wear for BlogHer, but turns out I was dead wrong. Every outfit I’m wearing to BlogHer this year came from The Paddington Jewelbox in Ashland, Oregon, or Macys in Medford.

Since I’m very excited about my fashion finds, and I want it to be known that women over 50 have it going on, I’ll be posting a picture of every outfit I’m wearing to every event at BlogHer this year.

Today, I do want to bring special attention to one of the bags I’ll be carrying, though, because I love it to pieces.

Made by Vendula London, this Birds of a Feather crossbody bag is perfect for day-tripping from the sessions to the Expo Hall. And doesn’t it go nicely with this bird print skirt by Darling Clothes? It’s a theme!

I discovered Vendula London at The Paddington Jewelbox and it was love at first sight. The feminine touches of lace and buttons are sure to make this bag a great conversation starter.

Vendula London

This bag came straight from London after I connected with Vendula on Twitter and told them how much I loved their products. Apparently this thing called shipping works!

This bag is very feminine, yet utilitarian at the same time. There’s plenty of room for my tablet and phone and mophie and drink tickets and cab receipts.

So it’s off to Chicago! See you at BlogHer 13!

There are always lots of conversations surrounding the event — what sessions to attend, which parties you were invited to, and of course WHAT TO WEAR!

This blew my mind- the whole private party thing. I didn’t start paying attention to Blogher chatter until the other day, so guess who is a day late and a dollar short? The high school drama surrounding the parties is so obnoxious, and really? I’m going to learn a few things and meet all the people I know online. I don’t even do sponsored posts so it shouldn’t matter to me in the least, but still- it’s a bit like “HEY! What about me!” LOL

I think the thing about the private parties is that it triggers something very primal in most of us. We don’t want to feel like we’re missing out. And who doesn’t want to be that special snowflake that everybody wants at their party?

I’m new here and want to play nice, but I gotta say I think this post does a bit of a disservice to undermine midlife writers who want to be taken seriously. To me, it also seems to reinforce the very junior high theme you seem to have derided when you were starting out. It’s definitely fun to hear the behind-the-scenes angle from someone who has risen to the top of her game, as you have, and I get that the intimacy with your readers is a big part of the appeal, but it kinda just makes me feel sad and left out. I love your writing; it’s so insightful, personal and humorous. And the video on the “about me” tab on your website is pure art. So I hope this comment is not taken out of turn; it’s just my honest feelings. I appreciate your work and all you do to support GenFabbers.
