Made in America

Bernie-DexterGetting ready for a large and important event like BlogHer takes a lot of planning. Unfortunately, sometimes large and important events that I should be planning for freak me out and shut me down.

I blame perimenopause and menopause for this.

Before 42, I don’t ever remember having all of this anxiety. One day it showed up and took residence in the middle of my chest.

Anxiety for me is not predictable. Just when I think I’ve figured my way around it–I use meditative breathing, exercise, visualization, medication–it comes back with a vengeance. I can go along feeling very confident and self-assured when suddenly: chest pain. Awful, terrible chest pain.

What does this have to do with this post about the dress I wore on Friday night in Chicago last week? Not much really. I just thought I’d throw it out there that I suffer from anxiety sometimes. I do my very best to not let it rule my life, but it isn’t always easy.

What also isn’t easy is finding beautiful dresses designed by American designers and actually made in America.

So when I found this pink frock–and if this isn’t a frock I don’t know what is–at The Paddington Jewel Box in Ashland, Oregon, I almost got whiplash doing a double-take at the label. WHAT?!?! MADE IN AMERICA?!? Impossible! Nobody in America is making adorable, affordable dresses anymore.

But it is true. This beautiful pink confection is designed by American designer, and pin-up model, Bernie Dexter.

Bernie says this about her fashion aesthetic:

Fashion design is the way I celebrate the female form.” – Bernie Dexter

And celebrate she does. I can’t remember the last time I wore a dress more feminine and well-fitted as this one.

I wore this to attend the illustrious B(L)oomer’s Party in Chicago. You might remember me talking about the B(L)oomer’s Party last year. This year the event was spectacular. Great venue, great guests, great swag. (For a list of the many terrific sponsors at this spectacular event scroll to the bottom of this post.)

It was a perfect evening, and I so loved wearing this absolutely perfect dress.

It WAS the perfect dress! And @Being_French liked the eiffel towers!

The pattern on the dress and Mr. @Being_French were entirely a coincidence. I’m sure he was pleased, though.

They should use you as a model. That dress fits you like it was made for you. How nice to find an American designer, making her clothes in America that you love! And, I agree, definitely a “frock”!

Beautiful, Chloe!

Thank you! When I tried it on in the store I knew I had to have it. It’s so rarely that I find a perfect dress like this. I wish more dresses were designed by American women. I think we’d see a much more flattering aesthetic.

Only you can manage to pull off looking properly demure and outrageously sexy at the same time! Thanks for mentioned the designer. I’m going shopping now!
