Who Says You Can’t Rock Fashion After 50?

in Aging Well, Style

vendula-6If you want to become a professional blogger, attendance at blogging conferences is a must. Not only are blogging conferences where all your best blogging friends are, but nowhere else are you going to find so many brand representatives and PR people gathered in one place.

Every now and again I read that it doesn’t matter what you wear to a blog conference. That simply is not true. Big blogging conferences require a lot of thought when it comes to fashion because, in essence, when you go to a blogging conference, you are going on a job interview. But unlike a regular job interview, you have no idea who might be looking to hire you.

No matter where you are, from the shuttle to and from the event, at the Expo Hall, on the dance floor, even while standing in line to get into the bathroom, every person you meet is a potential new client or connection.

Studies indicate that you have only 7 seconds to make that crucial first impression. And it isn’t your business card, or your elevator speech, that most people are using to determine whether or not you’re a person worth paying attention to. You want your wardrobe choices to reflect what you and your blog are all about.

Blog conferences are challenging when it comes to what to wear. You need to create a wardrobe that is professional, while allowing for the climate challenges of most convention centers. And you’ll want footwear that won’t murder your feet because you will be doing a lot  of walking. Furthermore, you’ll need to decide whether to create outfits that you can transition from day to evening wear, or if you’ll be heading back to your hotel room to change for the parties at night instead.

This year, since I was a speaker at the midlife session at BlogHer, I felt a little pressure to make sure that my clothes communicated to my audience, and the blogging world at large, that midlife is still a vital time in a woman’s life. I also wanted a wardrobe that truly expresses who I am, and what my blogging is all about.

Fashion After 40

It’s no secret that I love clothes and shoes. And unlike the stereotype that women of a certain age couldn’t care less about fashion as they grow older, I’ve come to care more. Maybe because I feel that I need to. When I was younger, I let my figure speak for itself, but as I’ve aged I’ve come to rely on my wardrobe to give me the feminine structure and definition I like.

And when I was actively raising my kids I didn’t have much money for clothes. Spending money on myself seemed so frivolous when I had clothes for my kids to buy, and all those extracurriculars to pay for. I love the freedom I have today to buy clothes for myself without the guilt.

What I Wore to BlogHer 2013

My fashion choices for this year reflect my current fascination with prints–especially florals–and very feminine lines with a vintage feel.

Because it is so difficult to get good pictures while actually attending events like BlogHer, I had my daughter, Rachel, from Sandals in the Snow, come over and do a pre-event photo shoot in our front yard.

I’m sad to say that I couldn’t find direct links to all of the things I wore, but if there is something you really love I suggest you contact the manufacturer and ask them where you can find the item. And don’t overlook the power of Twitter or Facebook in reaching out to brands you love.

This is what I wore on Friday during the day.

Both this feminine lacy dress and the adorable sweater are made by Darling Clothes. The sweater is aptly named “Chloe”. I purchased this entire outfit from The Paddington Jewel Box in Ashland, Oregon.

The sweater has little crocheted flowers with small pearls sown on.

The shoes are from Dansko, and you can find them at Amazon: Dansko Women’s Nina Sandal. They are incredibly comfortable.

My signature piece at the year’s BlogHer is this cupcake bag from Vendula London. If you can’t find this bag in the US, Vendula ships! I love this little dog at the cupcake store! The best part of this bag is that my laptop fit in it. It’s the prettiest briefcase I’ve ever had.

Here is the back of the bag. I love when accessories tell a story.

The bag is very well made. The interior print reminds me of my trip to London in 2011.

Tomorrow I’ll post what I wore to the events on Friday night.

We’ve all come to expect Miley Cyrus to make a bold fashion statement at every opportunity, and she sure hasn’t disappointed during her time in New York.

That is a very cute briefcase – I love that interior fabric and will have a look at their website. Rachel took some great photos! Oh and the seed pearls made me smile 🙂

The sweater is to die for. I was worried I’d be leaving crocheted flowers and seed pearls like bird seed all over the convention center floor, but I don’t think I lost a one.

You wouldn’t think coral and purple would go together. Hey! Maybe they don’t! Oh well. They do now.

I wore heels in the evening, but not during the day. I just couldn’t make myself do it.

I find it hard to believe that you are an introvert. I mean that as a compliment. I am an introvert myself so I can usually spot others. Love the photo shoot and that bag!

I really am shy at heart. But I overcompensate by being extroverted.
